Anotace
Pokrývá hlavní část aktivity ústavu. Na jeho řešení se podílejí rozhodující částí své aktivity všechny výzkumné skupiny. Cílem je přispět k postupnému prohlubování poznání vztahu mezi mikrostrukturou v celém objemu i na površích a rozhraních na jedné straně a vlastnostmi na druhé straně. Na tomto základě je možné optimalizovat jak mikrostrukturu, tak vlastnosti a konstruovat materiály zcela nové. Konkrétně je výzkum zaměřen na ultrajemnozrnné materiály, mikrokrystalické, nanokrystalické a amorfní materiály, intermetalika, monokrystaly a polykrystaly superslitin, pokročilé ocele, pokročilé hořčíkové slitiny, pokročilé slitiny železa a niklu, paměťové slitiny, kompozitní a nanokompozitní materiály, kovové lamináty, bezolovnaté pájky, magnetické polovodiče a polokovové magnety, magnetické multivrstvy a silicidy transitivních kovů. Studované fyzikální vlastnosti zahrnují relevantní mechanické vlastnosti (creep, únava, křehký lom) a/nebo vybrané elektrické a magnetické vlastnosti.
