Properties of ceramic materials may be enhanced or some new functionalities may be provoked by adding a dopant. The proper function of the dopant is conditioned by its homogeneous distribution in the system. The project aims to describe the dopant distribution by diffusion in the lattice and/or via grain boundaries using the combined theoretical and experimental approaches resulting in optimal processing of (co)doped ceramic materials. Both approaches will be applied to transparent ceramics with photoluminescent properties. The dopant behaviour and consequently system properties depend on lattice structure of the matrix, its chemical composition and on microstructural characteristics and thermodynamic properties of the system; especially the solubility of dopants in the matrix is essential. Several dopant/matrix combinations will be investigated to cover all classes of possible interactions between the dopant and the matrix. Based on the acquired knowledge, the qualified recommendations for preparing of doped ceramic materials of excellent properties will be formulated. |
