Run Your Calculation on a Quantum Computer Today

On Thursday, 13 November 2025, as part of the Qiskit Fall Fest, participants not only attended lectures but also had the opportunity to run a computation on a real quantum computer.

On Thursday afternoon, 13 November 2025, Martin Friák and Vojtěch Vašina, together with several colleagues at the Institute of Physics of Materials of the Czech Academy of Sciences, organized the Qiskit Fall Fest 2025. Qiskit (pronounced “kiss-kit”) is a software package developed by IBM for programming quantum computers in Python. The event resembled an open day dedicated specifically to quantum computing.

Participants first listened to a lecture by M. Friák titled “Quantum Computers – A Revolution on the Horizon”, followed by a lecture by V. Vašina on programming and running a simple quantum circuit (the same circuit currently displayed on the façade of the Institute as part of its light installation). Afterward, attendees were able to run a basic calculation on a quantum computer themselves and received a certificate confirming the successful execution.

For those interested in quantum computing, we would like to highlight that IBM offers free registration on its platform, providing 10 minutes of free quantum computing time per month on its quantum machines. So if you’re curious, you can start your quantum journey as soon as tonight. A detailed guide on how to gain access is included in the appendix of an article that is currently undergoing peer review.

The article also contains a description of a simple quantum circuit, along with instructions on how to run it on an IBM quantum computer (including noise) as well as on an idealized simulator (noise-free and error-free). If you’re thinking of diving into quantum science, this year is especially fitting—UNESCO has declared it the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
